"Azteq Technologies announces the very latest in Executive Personal Protection with the J series. Among the many upgrades from the K series are a much more reasonable interface with the Principle. No more biomechanical implants! The J series neuroprocessing unit provides direct voice commands in common conversational language. It's just like your biological "Vat Guards" but without the necessary fuel."
So went the announcement of Azteq's last ditch effort to save it's market share from the growing threat of Omnigenin the late 2040s. Certain militaries around the world were prepared to purchase entire runs of the J series in the military variant "AC". Azteq Executives were certain that this would be competitive edge they needed. It was too little, too late unfortunately and many of the J series were simply decommissioned. Some of the AC variant were offered to senior executives of Azteq as severance during the buyout\hostile take over meetings that resembled more of a hostage negotiation than anything Business students at Harvard State might recognize.
Dr. Eugene Martin "accepted" his J-ac series, cleaned out his office, and left the building for the last time. His J had yet to be fully configured so the shambling hulk that followed him was just another indiginity for the senior engineer and lead designer of, the now former, Azteq Technologies. The transition team from OGS thought it best that they keep the prototype of J and J-ac and offered only stock production J-ac series EPPs as the "severance" package. Dr. Martin fumed as he stepped into the tram for the long, economy class, ride to his tower.
The following year was a blur of depression and manic work periods devoted to bringing the stock J series up to the level of the prototype Dr. Martin had left at the lab. "Jackson", as Dr. Martin had named his J series, was nearly ready for public trials in the fall of 2050. Dr. Martin's anger and frustration had been continually fed as OGS had blackballed him in the cybernetics and biomechanical communities. The only work he could find was underground jobs and that was barely enough to provide for the lifestyle for which he had grown accustom let alone the continual work on Jackson. By 2060 Dr. Martin found himself in the lower city of New Delphi offering odd cyber enhancements for anyone with the credits and parts. Jackson had proved to be an able assistant except for the times that he simply disappeared. Dr. Martin had quit following the current events of the day. OGS's grip on the country had grown to such an extent that hardly a sector of the economy wasn't impacted by their work. The good doctor couldn't stand to see there success knowing that it came at his expense. When Jackson disappeared for days and weeks at a time Dr. Martin didn't notice the correlation with the spate of violent crimes in the city. Had Dr. Martin kept an even a cursory look at the news he would have recognized tell-tale signs that Jackson may well involved. The brutal rapes and murders were classic methods of the Azteq J-AC Subjugation constructs.
In January of 2064, the influence of OGS in New Delphi had the entire city tense, just waiting for the next shoe to drop. Rumors of competitors to OGS for cybernetics ran wild in the lower city and Dr. Martin seemed to be at the heart of it. High quality, corporate grade cybernetics and synergizing bioneural implants could be had without the standard "maintenance" requirements imposed by OGS which many believed to be an experimental program. Dr. Martin and Jackson were kept busy with work and things were beginning to look up. Jackson had been stable and present for a long time and served as Dr. Martin's prime example of his capabilities.
February of 2064 brought a very unfortunate incident. With the recent demise of the crime boss known simply as Lenny, the source of the curious cybernetics dried up. OGS began flooding the market with their proprietary gear and seeking anyone who had dealt in the "blackmarket" for "questioning". Dr. Martin disappeared leaving Jackson alone for the first time in his conscious existence. Jackson began searching for his Principle with a vengeance.
The destruction of OGS, while frustrating for Jackson because he didn't have a direct hand in it, relieved him of his need for retribution.
Presently, Mr. Jackson is working to re-establish his Principle's work...the continuation of a Legacy you might say.
